    Lance Corporal Michael W. M. Dean, a 26-year-old native of Oamaru, also stood guard at the foot of the memorial. Prominent government and military officials of the United States and New Zealand commemorated the 70th anniversary of the arrival of U.S. forces in Wellington during World War II. Australian and New Zealand forces were conducting heavy fighting in Northern Africa in 1942 while U.S. forces played a significant role in the defense of Oceania. Galvanic Kiwi is a U.S. Marine Corps and New Zealand Army training exchange designed to enhance interoperability and foster military-to-military relations between the U.S. and New Zealand.
