An aerial photograph shows three naval vessels underway in open ocean, likely during a formation exercise or transit operation. The formation includes a large aircraft carrier in the background, a smaller warship in the middle distance, and what appears to be a guided-missile cruiser or destroyer in the foreground. The ships are sailing in a loose column or echelon formation under partly cloudy skies.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) is alongside the Royal Australian Anzac-class guided-missile frigate HMAS Ballarat (FFH 155), center, and the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63). George Washington departed its homeport of Fleet Activities Yokosuka on May 26 to begin its 2012 patrol. George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
