Sgt. Joel Bruce participates in live-fire training aboard USS New Orleans here June 8. The 22-year-old Carbondale, Ill., native serves as a platoon sergeant with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit's maritime raid force. The unit embarked the ship, as well as USS Makin Island and USS Pearl Harbor in San Diego Nov. 14, beginning a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific, Horn of Africa and Middle East regions.
