On November 4, Rear Admiral Fredrick Luchtman, Physiological Episodes Action Team Lead for the United States Navy visited Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton and experienced the scientific force that is the one-of-a-kind research device, the Kraken. A pilot himself, Rear Adm. Luchtman donned his flight suite and strapped into the capsule with the help of the Kraken crew to partake in a device profile addressing pilot spatial disorientation.

“I really enjoyed my ride in the Kraken,” Luchtman said. “The six axes of movement produces a realistic flight experience, providing us the ability to tailor our research objectives to best understand spatial disorientation.”

Having an applied research program centered on the Kraken helps investigators work towards solutions to protect and enhance the health, readiness, and performance of aircrew.
