US Soldiers participate in 75th anniversary of the liberation of Thannenkirch

Thannenkirch, FRANCE -- André Bosshardt, former mayor of Thannenkirch and expert wood sculpture, shares with 2nd Lt. Nancy Chan, a chemical officer assigned to 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, stories of when the Americans came to liberate the village when he was only 14 years old at the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Thannenkirch, France, Dec. 1. Bosshardt, who is responsible for hundreds of wood carvings all over the village, joked that he had never seen chewing gum before the American soldiers gave him a piece. Bosshardt, at the age of 21, opened a small wood carvings workshop next to his father’s house in 1951 and has continued to make wood carvings to this day.
