A person wearing military camouflage uniform holds a small yellow smiley face stress ball extended toward the camera against a dark background. The ball is in sharp focus while the person behind it is intentionally blurred using shallow depth of field. The composition creates a visual contrast between the cheerful yellow emoji ball and the serious military context.

Master Sgt. Crystal Carper, a first sergeant assigned to the Ohio National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing, shares her story of battling depression and suicide. Depression is a disease that can cause one to feel isolated, hopeless and helpless and alone. But, Carper is not alone. “I just wanted to convey my story so that people know, that if they are in a place like that, you are not alone,” Carper said. “Talk to people. Talk to anyone. Never stop talking.” (Air National Guard photo by Senior Master Sgt. Beth Holliker).
