Sgt. Alexander Haynes wipes the rain out of his eyes as he works alongside Spc. Joseph Smith, both combat medic specialists assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, to treat a simulated casualty during the final event of the Army Best Medic Competition at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Sept. 25. Teams had to gather medical supplies at multiple points scattered across a map, then race to the finish where a simulated casualty awaited their care.
Twenty-eight two-Soldier teams from around the world traveled to Washington state to compete in the finals to be named the Army’s Best Medic. The competition is a 72-hour test of the teams’ physical and mental skills in areas of physical fitness, tactical marksmanship, leadership, warrior skills and land navigation. Competitors must be agile, adaptive leaders who demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of medical, technical and tactical proficiencies through a series of hands-on tasks in a simulated operational environment.
