Col. Brian P. Annichiarico, Marine Corps Base Hawaii commanding officer, speaks to an audience during the opening ceremony of a new 150-room bachelor enlisted quarters, May 9, 2012. The BEQ replaces older barracks that have been in service since the 1940s. The BEQ incorporates energy savings and environmental initiatives such as a 30 percent energy savings using high efficiency air conditioning, lighting, water saving fixtures, low maintenance native vegetation, building materials with recycled content and low volatile organic compound material. The adjacent parking stalls feature an array of photovoltaic panels, which collect solar energy and supply up to 474 Kw of electric power.
