“Today I’m here to enlist in the Air National Guard. I’m really excited – obviously I’m really nervous too. I just want to know what exactly I’ll be doing with my job. And I want to know when I’m leaving and what more to expect than just to be yelled at all the time. I’m expecting to wake up very early every day and to be scared awake. I’m definitely a little nervous for the running. I’m not the best runner. But my thing is, with swimming for so long, I feel like I’m not someone who just gives up. I’m most nervous about the mental aspect and being able to push myself to keep going farther than I think I can.

I just graduated high school. I feel like people who are older and going to basic, they’re going to be more experienced. I don’t have anything that compares to boot camp. My bosses have been pretty easygoing. Someone who’s older and actually has had real jobs, that probably relates more to that commitment. The only thing I can compare to it is PE, but that’s nothing in comparison. So I definitely hope I can be more confident with myself and gain some experience, and also that I gain some opportunities here to grow my career.

I’m super close with my family. My uncle and my grandpa were in the Navy, and my cousin’s in the Air Force. They’re like, ‘You’re going to have rough times, but you’re also going to experience the really good parts of it.’ My mom and dad are excited too. I’m sad I’m going to be apart from them for so long, but that’s how it would be if I went to school. I like how it’s also going to push me to be more independent and not lean on them as much. I feel like these next six years are just going to be me learning more about myself and what’s out there for me.”
