Capt. Ed Rhoades, commanding officer of amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA5), presents Eroni "Aaron" Kumana with a gift during a ceremony for his courageous act more than 60 years ago. During World War II, Mr. Kumana rescued Lt. John F. Kennedy, nearly 18 years before he became president, and his crew following the PT-109's collision with a Japanese destroyer near Pudding Island on Aug. 2, 1943. Peleliu is deployed in support of the Pacific Partnership mission and is providing medical and engineering support to the local citizens of the Solomon Islands.
