Sharing from the top to those where it all begins... Dr. Andrew Jones, Deputy Chief, Total Force, Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, shares insight during his visit to Naval Hospital Bremerton on Aug. 20, 2019, to staff members assigned to Northwest Beginning Family Birth Center concerning a number of changes underway that will impact NHB and military treatment facilities (MTF) as a whole. "My responsibility to you is being your advocate in this transition," stated Jones, Navy Medicine's top civilian, noting that there are two distinct entities - military personnel and civil service employees - involved as the Defense Health Agency assumes administration and management duties as part of a restructuring mandate from Congress, Oct 1, 2019. There are approximately 11,500 civilians in Navy Medicine, with nearly 430 civil service employees at NHB. "Civilians are not warfighters like those on active duty. We support our warfighters. There is still work to do, but come Oct 1, the work you do that day will be the same the next day. The head for DHA at NHB will be your commanding officer as Capt. (Shannon J.) Johnson, who will serve as the MTF director under the DHA, and oversee the active duty staff for Navy Medicine as NHB shifts to become a Navy Medicine Ready Training Command (Official Navy photo by Douglas H Stutz, Naval Hospital Bremerton public affairs).
