DAHLGREN, Va. (July 17, 2019) – U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman Max Shuman mounts a thermocouple assembly that houses spring fit thermocouples to a target plate during his internship at the Navy’s Laser Lethality and Development Facility which features an above-ground tunnel used for evaluating high energy laser weapon systems. Shuman’s mentor, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division scientist Chris Heflin, observes as the Midshipman prepares for a test shot accomplished with a flat top beam to ensure uniform heating across the sample.
