Sgt. Henryk W. Bender (right), 334th Quartermaster Battalion, gets assistance from Spc. Christopher Fitt prior to the Appearance Board at the 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command 2012 Best Warrior competition. Held from March 29-April 1, at Fort Dix, N.J., the competition tested Bender and 11 other soldiers in a range of events. Like many of the competitors, Bender sees the experience as an opportunity to share with the soldiers in his unit. “Even if I was in last place, you leave with a sense of pride, a sense of ‘wow,’ when you look at this level,” he said. “There’s so many other soldiers that you ended up beating out to get to this position – even if I leave in dead last place and don’t pass a single event, I’m still absolutely happy that I’m here and excited that I got to compete.”
