Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 101 Grim Reapers was deactivated after more than seven years of service as the F-35C Lightning II Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS). The Grim Reapers of VFA-101 played an integral role in jump-starting the U.S. Navy’s F-35C program when the program first arrived at Eglin Air Force Base in 2012. VFA-101's assets will be consolidated at Naval Air Station Lemoore, enabling the U.S. Navy to better support Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) production, operational fleet transitions for both U.S Navy and Marine Corps squadrons, Initial Operation Test & Evaluation (IOT&E) and Naval Aviation Warfare Development Command (NAWDC) requirements. The last remaining F-35C aircraft belonging to VFA-101 depart Eglin AFB for Naval Air Station Lemoore after the squadron's deactivation ceremony.
