Hunter Smith, airframe mechanics with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, clean the tail of a CH-53E Super Stallion in the hanger bay of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). Marines attached to Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 (Reinforced) routinely perform maintenance on aircraft located aboard the Kearsarge to ensure they remain operationally functional while at sea. Marines and Sailors with the 22nd MEU and Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group are deployed to the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
