U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Harley Holter, a refrigeration and air conditioning technician with 1st Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, plays a flute with Roberta Estrada, San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians, during the annual Multicultural Day festival at the Mainside Exchange, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, May 17, 2019.
Holter is an Alaska native with an ancestry that stems from the Haida and Tlingit tribes of the Pacific Northwestern region. He happened to discover the festival while on his lunch break.
“It felt awesome to see a Native American culture, especially when I don’t get to see it as much. It reminded me of home, and honestly, it made my entire day to encounter them.”
Multicultural Day is an event hosted by Marine Corps Community Services that highlights the different cultures of base personnel and the cultures of those in the surrounding community.
Estrada is an Oceanside, California resident with a heritage that stems from the Luiseño tribe of the San Luis Rey Valley. Her father was a Marine and she was born on MCB Camp Pendleton. She was happy to see that there is a community of people with similar cultures in the military that she can interact with and inform about other events.
“He came up and was so excited to see us. I was really happy to see him come up and just interact with us. It’s really nice when you make a connection with someone from another tribe; that’s what this is all about.”
