Maj. Paul A. Buta, from Gambrill, Md., is presented the Purple Heart, March 4, at Camp Pendleton, Calif., by Col. Paul K. Lebidine, the former commanding officer of 3rd Civil Affairs Group and Lt. Col. Stefan M. Dirghalli, the acting commanding officer of 3rd CAG, for wounds suffered while conducting combat operations in northern Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan, Jan. 3, 2011. Buta served as a team leader with Civil Affairs Team 2, Detachment 3, 3rd CAG, I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group (Forward), in direct support of 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, and participated in a cordon and search operation. Buta's vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, which resulted in a mobility kill of his vehicle. The violent explosion of the IED threw Buta against the side of the vehicle where he was stunned and suffered a concussion, contusions, and sensory distortion to the right hand and forearm. Buta was evacuated to the 2/9 Battalion Aid Station for medical attention.
