Powell, from Rocky Mount, N.C., reports a surface contact to the bridge as Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class John Eric Faulkner, from Knocksville, Tenn., mans a .50-caliber machine gun aboard the Independence variant littoral combat ship USS Montgomery (LCS 8) as the ship transits through a simulated mine detection area.
