Sgt. Matthew Hammaker, a mortarman with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, swims a relay during the Raider's Challenge event at Hansen Aquatic Center, Okinawa, Japan, April 12, 2019. During this event, the Marines of Alpha Company represented their platoons swimming and running in various relays, competing for a chance to claim the hallowed Raider's Paddle. Alpha Company composes the small boat raid specialists for BLT 1/4, the Ground Combat Element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
