Sgt. Matthew Hammaker, a mortarman with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, swims a relay during the Raider's Challenge event at Hansen Aquatic Center, Okinawa, Japan, April 12, 2019. Hammaker is a native of Roswell, Georgia. During this event, the Marines of Alpha Company represented their platoons swimming and running in various relays, competing for a chance to claim the hallowed Raider's Paddle. Alpha Company composes the small boat raid specialists for BLT 1/4, the Ground Combat Element of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps' only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
