Able Seaman Clearance Diver Paul Degelder from the Royal Australian Navy plays with service dog “Jake” during sitting volleyball practice at the 2012 Marine Corps Trials at Camp Pendleton, Calif., Feb. 15. Degelder was attacked by a bull shark during an exercise in Sydney, Australia, leaving him with a below the knee amputation, and a below the elbow amputation. The Marine Corps Trials is a Wounded Warrior Regiment hosted event in which approximately 300 wounded, ill or injured Marines compete for a spot on the 50-athlete, All-Marine team roster. The selected athletes will go on to compete in the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, April 30 – May 6. The games are a competition between all branches of service for wounded, ill or injured service members. Degelder is competing in the shooting, volleyball and swimming events.
