Stogel was attending Mass at the Cathedral with the rest of 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, prior to marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. The 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry traditionally leads the world's largest St. Patrick's Day Parade. Stogel wears a sprig of boxwood on his uniform because Irish-American Soldiers of the 69th Infantry marked their uniforms that way during the Battle of Fredricksburg in 1863. (N.Y.
