Panama City, FL -- Nicole Ervin Parker accepts the Navy Ensign from Naval Support Activity Panama City commanding officer, Cmdr. Jay Sego during a ceremony held Thursday, Mar. 14, 2019, honoring Parker's father and World War II veteran Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Wheeler R. Ervin while husband Terry Parker and son Kristopher look on. The family also received the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Valor and Purple Heart for Ervin's actions aboard the Liberty Ship SS William W. Gerhard in August 1943. As a member of the Navy's Armed Guards whose mission was to protect the Liberty Ship convoys, he and his fellow gunner's mates successfully repulsed two aerial enemy attacks of multiple bombs, torpedoes and strafing gunfire in the Mediterranean Sea. Petty Officer Ervin was eligible for the Purple Heart but never received it prior to his discharge in 1946. Ervin passed away in March 1980 at the age of 55. The Navy Board of Decorations and Medals has been reviewing records of the men and women who served in World War II to ensure they, or their family members, receive the medals and awards they had earned.
