A senior U.S. Army officer in dress uniform is kneeling down and smiling at a small infant or toddler sitting on the floor. The officer is wearing a dark blue Army Service Uniform with gold stripe trousers, rank insignia indicating a general officer (multiple stars visible on shoulder), and highly polished black dress shoes. The setting appears to be a waiting room or anteroom with leather chairs, a baby stroller, and personal belongings scattered about.

Lt. Gen. Thomas James, Jr. (left) Commanding General, First Army, pauses a moment to greet Andrew Bundermann's eight-month-old daughter before the presentation ceremony of the Distinguished Service Cross to Bundermann. Bundermann was serving as the acting commander of troop B, 3rd Sqdr., 61st Cav. Reg. when Combat Outpost Keating, the post Bundermann had been left in charge of, was attacked by more than 400 enemy fighters. With only 53 Soldiers at COP Keating, Bundermann coordinated a defense for more than 12 hours, and endured another four days of fighting, that killed more than 100 Taliban fighters and injured another 80. The Distinguished Service Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor.
