Four empty boots signify the loss and service of Soldiers killed in a deadly attack Feb. 9, 2009. Lt. Col. Gary Derby, Sgt. Joshua Ward, Pvt. 1st Class Albert Jex and Pvt. 1st Class Jonathan Roberge were killed when a vehicle borne improvised explosive device hit their vehicle. Derby was the battalion commander for 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division and the three Soldiers were part of his security detachment.
