Brig. Gen. (Ret.) James Kemp McLaughlin, the founder of the West Virginia Air National Guard, poses for a 100th birthday portrait at the Edgewood Summit nursing home, Charleston, W.Va., on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018. Born December 7, 1918 in Braxton County, W.Va., McLaughlin served as a B-17 pilot during WWII, and was awarded the Distuished Flying cross with three clusters, the U.S. Army Air Corps Air medal with eight clusters, and the French Croix de Guerre, and a Presidential unit citation.
