Capt. Harrison Fletcher, a infantry officer with 1st Infantry Division Atlantic Resolve Mission Command Element deployed in Poznan, Poland, jogs across a Polish bridge to prepare for the Athens Authentic Marathon held on Nov. 11 in Greece.
The historical significance of the run is that it covers the same ground that Pheidippides ran when he brought news of victory from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens. This event birthed the distance for all marathons that are run today.
Fletcher’s physical and mental toughness training for and competing in the marathon, demonstrates commitment and intestinal fortitude required to be a successful Soldier.
The deployment of ready, combat-credible U.S. forces to Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve is evidence of the strong and unremitting U.S. commitment to NATO and Europe. Through continuous, multinational training and security cooperation activities, Atlantic Resolve builds readiness, increases interoperability and enhances the bond between ally and partner militaries.
