Capt. Harrison Fletcher, a native of Valdese, North Carolina, and infantry officer with 1st Infantry Division Atlantic Resolve Mission Command Element deployed to Poznan, Poland, runs laps to prepare for the Athens Authentic Marathon held on Nov. 11 in Greece.
The marathon covers the same ground that Pheidippides ran when he brought news of victory from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens. This event birthed the distance for all marathons that are run today.
“This has been a life-long dream of mine to compete in this marathon,” said Fletcher. “It was an honor to run in this Marathon. My legs are sore and I can hardly walk but it was a great experience.”
The deployment of ready, combat-credible U.S. forces to Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve is evidence of the strong and unremitting U.S. commitment to NATO and Europe. Through continuous, multinational training and security cooperation activities, Atlantic Resolve builds readiness, increases interoperability and enhances the bond between ally and partner militaries.
