Technical Sgt. Eric Maertens, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) specialist and Staff Sgt. Michael Pincheira, 12CTS Field Instructor at Ft. Irwin National Training Center, California, discuss the pilot extraction exercise that had just taken place. Pilots Capt. Phil “Upper” Butler and Capt. John “Harden” Toliuszis simulated downed pilots and had to survive until rescue forces could retrieve them, while evading opposing forces. This training is part of a larger exercise based out of Nellis AFB, Nevada, where approximately 200 members of the Colorado Air National Guard and over eight F-16’s are partaking in a Green Flag exercise. The 140th Wing, Colorado Air National Guard, is participating in a Green Flag training exercise based out of Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Roughly 200 members and eight F-16 aircraft participated in the realistic training which is meant to prepare them for their upcoming deployment overseas next year. Green Flag is a realistic air-land integration combat training exercise involving the air forces of the United States and its allies and is primarily conducted in conjunction with US Army Combat Training Center exercises at Ft Irwin, CA. It is a Close Air Support and Joint exercise administered by the US Air Force Air Warfare Center and Nellis AFB through the 549th Combat Training Squadron.
