The Vermont Army National Guard held their annual Best Warrior competition September 8th and 9th at Ethan Allen Training Site, Jericho, Vermont with some of the state’s best soldiers vying for the top spot. The 14 competitors completed two days of grueling Army tasks, including weapons qualification, stress shoot, Army Physical Fitness test, Land Navigation course, both day and night, written test and an oral board, finishing with the challenging 10 mile Ruck March. The overall winner for the Non-Commissioned Officer group was Sgt. Max Archambault, Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 172nd Cavalry Regiment (Mountain). The top finisher for the enlisted group was Spc. Benjamin Gonzalez, Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 172nd Cavalry Regiment (Mountain) who finished the Ruck in an impressive 2 hours and 19 minutes.
Spc. Benjamin Gonzalez added, “The toughest part for me was the hills on the Ruck March, I tried to make up some time on the downhill portion, running when I could and then saving myself for the uphill parts.”
“For me the most difficult part was the night Land Navigation, with no moon it was hard to see anything, so I just tried to get as many points as I could in the earlier dusk light, and then save my energy for the next day’s Ruck March, added Spc. Justin Lindor, Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 172nd Cavalry Regiment (Mountain).
The top two winners from each category will be competing in the Regional competition in New Hampshire in the spring of 2019, the top four winners in each category will be heading to the National competition.
