The Atlantic Council presented inaugural recipients the 2009 Freedom Awards Nov. 8, 2009, in Berlin in honor of heroes past and present who by their actions, courage and leadership have cherished, defended and advanced the cause of freedom. The 2009 awardees are U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (on behalf of the American people), German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle (on behalf of the German people), Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowerite (on behalf of the German people), Former President of Poland Lech Walesa, Vaclav Havel (in absentia), and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Adm. James Stavridis (on behalf of NATO Troops).
