ARCTIC OCEAN - Dr. Craig Lee (center) reviews sonar information before deciding where to drop a navigation beacon Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy (WAGB-20) approximately 100 miles northwest of Barrow, Alaska, in the Chukchi Sea. Lee is the head scientist aboard the Healy and is researching stratified ocean dynamics in the Arctic for the Office of Naval Research. Approximately 30 scientists are aboard the Healy deploying sensors and autonomous submarines in the Arctic to study how environmental factors affect the water below the ice surface. The Healy is one of two ice breakers in U.S. service and is the only military ship dedicated to conducting ice research in the Arctic.
