Frank Pappalardo, from Newark, Calif., assigned to the 909th Air Refueling Squadron, manages the boom and refueling line from a U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker to a F-15C Eagle over the Pacific Ocean during exercise Valiant Shield 18, Sept. 18, 2018. Valiant Shield is a biennial, U.S. only, field training exercise with a focus on integration of joint training among U.S. forces. This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking, and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
