Davis’ family replaces the shoulder boards on Davis’ uniform as he is promoted to the rank of captain during a change of command ceremony on board the Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Hampton (SSN 767). Cmdr. Phillip Sylvia Jr. relieved Davis as the commanding officer of Hampton during the change of command ceremony, a military tradition representing the formal transfer of responsibility for a unit from one officer to another.
