The message sent by Major Charles Whittlesey commander of the " Lost Battalion" by carrier pigeon asking American artillery to stop shelling because they were hitting his troops from the 1st and 2nd Battaliions of the 308th Infantry Regiment on Oct. 4, 1918. The American troops had gotten cut off during their advance and carrier pigeons were the only way to communicate with the headquarters of the 77th Division. (National Archives)
