Petty Officer 1st Class, John Wheeler, musician, leads the Pacific Fleet Band while performing at the start of the POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sept. 16. More than 200 past and present military members and civilians gathered with the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) as they honored those held in captivity or are missing in action from past conflicts. The third Friday of September has served as the National POW/MIA Recognition Day since 1986 and honors and recognizes the sacrifices of those Americans who have been prisoners of war and to remind the nation of those individuals that are still missing.
JPAC is responsible for the recovery of missing Americans from past conflicts and travels all around the world in search of those individuals in order to bring full accountability to their families and the American people.
