The region occupied by the 27th Divison in July and August 1918 was criss-crossed by irrigation ditches. At this irrigation ditch near Ouderzeele, Belgium, the British had built bridges and boardwalks so that troops retreating from a German assult, or advancing to counter attack, would have no trouble crossing the region.
