The Crosses monument towers over Adam Mickiewicz Square in Poznań, Poland, just ahead of the city memorial ceremony in honor of the 1956 Uprising, where over 100,000 Polish citizens took to the streets in protest against communist rule. This was the first of many protests which saw hundreds of citizens die in the pursuit of freedom. The Crosses monument was erected in memory of those uprisings. (U.S. Army photo by Master Sgt. Nathan Hoskins, 1st Inf. Div. Public Affairs/Released)
