The 82nd Airborne Division parachuted into Adazi Base, Latvia, with eight C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft June 9. The paratroopers departed Fort Bragg, N.C., June 8 and flew non-stop to the Baltics, with an in-flight refuel over the Atlantic Ocean. The soldiers donned parachutes and prepared equipment inside the aircraft to simulate a no-notice transatlantic Global Response Force (GRF) mission. The 82nd, as the nucleus of the United States Army's GRF, maintains an ability to deploy thousands of paratroopers anywhere in the world within 18 hours. Once on the ground in Latvia, the paratroopers conducted assaults and live fire exercises across multiple follow-on objectives.
