An illumination round lights up the distance, burning bright as it parachutes safely to the ground, making the area that it was fired to almost bright as day. Mortarmen with 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center, fire illumination rounds on a regular basis to help deter militants from launching indirect-fire attacks on Camp Taji, Iraq, and also keep a supply of high-explosive rounds in reserve for counter-fire purposes.
