Pāhoa, Hawaii, May 18, 2018 – A resident wears a gasmask to protect from the harmful sulfur dioxide emissions that resulted from the Kīlauea volcanic eruption. The nearby residential area of Leilani Estates has been evacuated and is monitored by local authorities with support from the Hawaii National Guard. The guardsmen are providing around-the-clock presence and guidance to evacuees. FEMA staff are on the ground to support local officials with life-saving emergency protective measures, debris removal, and the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged publicly-owned facilities.
