Lay and Brunsell are both combat engineers with Alpha Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion, and they are 26 and 21-year-old natives of Jellico, Tennessee, and Max, North Dakota, respectively. Lemari is an engineer with 523rd Engineer Support Company, and is a 24-year-old native of Majuro, Marshall Islands. Exercise Balikatan, in its 34th iteration, is an annual U.S.-Philippine military training exercise focused on a variety of missions, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, counterterrorism and other combined military operations held from May 7 to 18.
