PATROL BASE KAKAR, Helmand province, Afghanistan - Staff Sgt. Joshua Mast, the platoon sergeant for 3rd Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, fires the M240B machine gun from the turret during an attack by insurgents on Patrol Base Kakar, Afghanistan, July 24. The attack happened following a patrol and convoy that just left the base. Mast is a Santa Rosa, Calif., native and joined the Marine Corps in 2002.
