Australian Defence Force Flying Officer Chris Schmidt, a joint battlefield controller with No. 452 Squadron Tindal Flight updates the Aerodrome Terminal Information Service during Talisman Sabre 2011. No. 452 Squadron Tindal Flight is responsible for Air Traffic Control at Royal Australian Air Force Base Tindal. RAAF air traffic controllers are known as joint battlefield airspace controllers, because they are capable not only of providing conventional ATC, but also can perform a tactical role providing airspace coordination and control in military operations. Talisman Sabre 2011 is a biennial military exercise, which combines Australian and U.S. maritime, land and air forces. This exercise is a major undertaking, which reflects the closeness of the Australian and U.S. alliance and the strength of the military-military relationship. (Australian Defence Force photo by Cpl.
