Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific Diver John Pryor assists University of Florida team member Patrick Walters with in-water checks to the university’s “Subjugator” Autonomous Underwater Vehicle during the 14th Annual International RoboSub Competition held at SSC Pacific. The contest, co-sponsored by U.S. Office of Naval Research and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, attracted more than 200 students from 30 schools and seven countries to pit their self-guided robotic submarines against each other in a race for the title “Best RoboSub.” AUVSI is the world's largest non-profit organization devoted exclusively to advancing the unmanned systems community and the development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, which are important to the Navy because they perform a variety of missions including underwater mapping, mine location, and facilitating detailed scientific research. As the Navy's Information Dominance Systems Command, SPAWAR supports AUV development and strongly encourages all students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
