Edna Jackson, the 65th mayor of Savannah and the first African-American woman to hold the position, discussed her efforts for the civil rights movement and how the struggles of her fellow African-Americans motivated her to persevere in the face of adversity during the “Keeping it Real” event, Mar. 8, 2018, at Fort Stewart. Jackson served as mayor from 2012 to 2016. With women making up approximately 15% of the military force, their growing representative share of the military force and increasing access to once prohibited career opportunities, there is a pressing need to cultivate and develop leadership in this underrepresented population of our Armed Forces.
