Stargazers all over Afghanistan went to bed late as they stayed up to catch the first lunar eclipse of the year. The eclipse began before midnight and ended about 3 a.m. Afghanistan time and was described as spectacular, beautiful and awesome according to comments by NATO and International Security Assistance Force members during the midnight stroll around the Headquarters ISAF compound located in the capital city of Kabul. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon, earth and sun are completely in line and the moon passes into the earth's shadow. This lunar eclipse, one of the two predicted to occur this year, turned red as the earth's atmosphere scattered the sun's light, thus allowing only red photons to pass. Sky gazers who missed the spectacle will still be able to catch a repeat total eclipse of the moon this December 10, which will occur at a much earlier hour.
