Richard R. White, New York State's deputy secretary for public safety, presents Kwabena O. Mensah, father of Pfc. Emmanuel Mensah, with the New York State Medal for Valor, the state's highest military award, during a ceremony at Keating Hall, Fordham University in Bronx, N.Y., Feb. 16, 2018. New York City fire officials credit Mensah with saving four lives during an apartment building fire Dec. 28, 2017, rescuing people three times before he returned to the building and did not come out. Pfc. Mensah completed Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va., in early Dec. 2017, and intended to serve as a wheeled vehicle mechanic and begin drilling with the New York Army National Guard's 107th Military Police Company in Jan. 2018 prior to his death.
