A North Dakota National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter hovers as a large sandbag is lowered into position during a training exercise of South Dakota National Guard Quick Reaction Forces near the Expo Center in Fort Pierre, June 5. National Guard teams trained on how to tether and release 1-ton sandbags to the Black Hawks. QRFs will be utilizing this skill to place sandbags at trouble areas along the levees where high water prohibits other vehicles from doing so, in the event a levee is compromised. There are nearly 1,300 S.D. National Guard soldiers and airmen working with local, state and federal agencies around the clock during this historic flooding event to protect homes, property and people of South Dakota.
