A United States Army CH-47 Chinook tandem-rotor helicopter is performing a sling-load operation, lifting an M777 howitzer artillery piece over a field with bare deciduous trees in the background. The scene appears to be a military training exercise conducted in a cold-weather environment. The helicopter is in active flight with both rotor systems visibly spinning.

A CH-47 Chinook helicopter, crewed by Soldiers of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, sling load an M777 howitzer out of a fire point, Jan. 31, 2018, over the Fort Campbell, Kentucky, training area. 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 101st Airborne Division Artillery Brigade, called upon the 101st CAB to support its platoon-level live-fire certification and qualification during which howitzers and artillerymen were transported by air from one area to another to simulate an air assault gun raid. Artillerymen were allotted a specific time in which to prepare the guns to be sling loaded and prepared to be fired. Once given a fire mission, the artillerymen aimed their howitzers and fired on command. At the conclusion of their mission, they were allotted a specific time to prepare the howitzers to be sling loaded out. This training is conducted twice a year and is part of progressive training evaluation which begins with individual testing, and continues through battalion-level. (Photo by Staff Sgt.
