The Silver Star Medal, the Nation's third highest medal awarded for valor against an armed enemy of the U.S., was awarded to Chief Master Sgt. Michael West, a Special Tactics operator with the 24th Special Operations Wing, for his actions during a deployment to Afghanistan in 2006. During Operation MEDUSA, a five-day NATO operation charged with clearing an insurgent safehaven, West utilized 58 coalition aircraft to deliver 24,000 pounds of precision ordnance to save 51 Special Forces soldiers and 33 coalition partners.
